Along the Onkel-Tom-Straße there are only a few Villas. So it is not really what you are expecting from this noble area oft own. But instead of building of prestige we will find numerous houses which found their place in the history of architecture. From1926 to 1927 the house builder cooperative Gehag built a housing estate with payable rented flats and terraced houses. The artistic management was coordinated by Bruno Taut who afterwards was often mocked for his so called “Papageiensiedlung” (parrot housing estate) due to its colourful design.
We will contrast this special kind of architecture with the modern single family houses planned and materialized by Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
